The team:

18 ambulatory vets, 4 surgeons, 1 medic, 7 nurses.

Learning Opportunities:

Rotating internship through medicine and surgery.
High caseload of neonates during season and high-volume orthopaedic cases.
Opportunity for training in acquisition of advanced imaging such as CT and MRI.
Regular tutorials throughout the year.
End of year proficiency expected in anaesthesia, lameness diagnostics, management of emergency cases and core surgical principles.

SYCAMORE LODGE EQUINE HOSPITAL

Number of positions annually: 8 interns, 13 month internships, starting in July or December.
Salary: €25,000-28,000 depending on experience.
Accommodation: provided.
Pool vehicle provided.
Rota: 1:2 to 1:4 depending on time of year.

The team: 3 specialists surgeons ECVS/ACVS, consultant specialist in internal medicine and critical care, reproductive specialist, 7 nurses/support staff

VDS VCI paid

Annual CPD allowance – €1200

Learning Opportunities:
Rotating internship between anaesthesia, surgery (including lameness examination and diagnostic imaging) and internal medicine with the opportunity for ambulatory rotation to assist senior vets in the off-season. Dedicated out of hours rotation during the season.

Proficiency in adult and neonatal anaesthesia
Care of hospitalised patients including ICU/NICU.
Acquisition and interpretation of radiographic, ultrasound and nuclear scintigraphic imaging.
Busy surgical caseload inc. arthroscopy, laparoscopy, transphyseal screw placement, upper airway surgery, fracture fixation, urogenital procedures and emergencies inc. colic and caesarean sections.
Basic nerve blocks.
Endoscopy, gastroscopy and dynamic endoscopy
Weekly participation and presentation in journal clubs
Encouragement and support to present case report at national veterinary conference.

ANGLESEY LODGE EQUINE HOSPITAL

6-month internship position in December/ January.
Salary: €26,208 gross annual salary.
No accommodation.
VCI fee refunded on completion, VDS paid and IEVA membership paid.
Rota: 3 in 5 rotating between first on call, second on call and nights. 2 wknds off in 5.
The team: 8 ambulatory vets, 4 hospital based vets inc. Specialists in surgery. 5 interns, 3 nurses, 6 animal care assistants and 4 support staff.

Learning Opportunities:

Rotating internship between anaesthesia, surgery and internal medicine with focus on neonatology in a purpose-built referral hospital
End of year of year proficiency expected in adult and neonatal anaesthesia (inc. gaseous and intravenous anaesthesia for field procedures)
Basic nerve blocks including perineural and joints
Acquisition and interpretation of radiographic, ultrasound and nuclearscintigraphic imaging
Wide and varied surgical procedures inc. fracture fixation, laparascopic urogenital procedures and emergencies inc. colic and caesarean sections.
Regular participation and presentation in journal clubs and each intern encouraged and supported to produce case report to present at a national veterinary conference.

LISADELL EQUINE HOSPITAL

Number of positions annually: 2 interns (Staggered intakes Autumn and Spring)
Package: Salary €20- 28K commensurate with experience.
Accommodation: included with all bills covered.
Pool vehicle available for use.
VDS VCI paid.
Rota: 1 in 3
The team: 7 vets including cert holder, plus 2 surgeons and 3 interns. 3 nurses and 4 support staff.

Learning Opportunities:

Anaesthesia (450 surgeries annually).
Care of hospitalised patients.
Medical cases including neonates.
Lamenesses: will be confident in all blocks and most joint medications, ultrasound, radiology etc. by end of year.
Gastroscopy, airway endoscopy, BAL and medical ultrasound.
Assist with and attend ambulatory calls independently with support.
Training in reproductive ultrasound, AI, uterine lavage etc – the interns do most of the frozen mare scanning under supervision so will be highly. competent in this by the end of the programme.
Regular tutorials and journal clubs.

UCD VETERINARY HOSPITAL

The Team: 4 specialists; Two in surgery, one internal medicine and one reproduction. Three residents, 3 interns, 3 nurses and 3 support staff

Learning Opportunities:

Rotating internship between surgery and internal medicine/reproduction.
Primary responsibilities for inpatient care and diagnostics and assisting with relevant procedures.
Participation in all cases under the supervision of residents and clinicians.
Teaching and supervision responsibilities of final year students.
Regular journal clubs and presentation of a seminar on a selected topic- can be converted to a publication where appropriate.

TROYTOWN EQUINE HOSPITAL

Troytown GreyAbbey Hospital offers a limited number of internship positions for graduate veterinarians – the positions are for a fixed period of 12 months.

The Intern’s main responsibility are in-patient and out-patient care based at the hospital.

Duties include anaesthesia, intensive care monitoring and the day-to-day care of all of the hospitalized patients. In addition, Interns will help perform radiography, ultrasonography, nuclear scintigraphy (bone scanning), MRI scanning, colic and lameness workups.
